General info
The city of Gallipoli, from the Greek for "Beautiful City", is a pearl in the blue Ionian sea. Old fishing and sailing city, fort agains the Turks, its splendid beaches and lovely historical monuments that surround it, the smell of the wonderful traditional cooking. The city is divided into 2 areas: the old city and the new hamlet. The historical centre comes from an island connected to dry land by a bridge and is full of old and new buildings. To deter enemy attacks, they built a wall in 1500 which is now a panoramic road which completely surrounds the island, giving wonderful views. To the North you can admire a part of the Neretine coast, while to the South the bay is divided by the Pizzo. The city, half occupied by tourists, has wonderful beaches along its coastline and is equipped with hotels and campsites.
