Rijeka is often referred to as the gateway to the Croatian islands. At the bustling harbor, you can watch ships coming in and out. Trsat Castle, Croatian: Gradina Trsat, once served as a military fortress for the Romans. Over 500 steps lead up to the castle's height. You can comfortably reach the castle directly by bus. The castle interior houses a small permanent exhibition on the history of the castle and the city. A trip to Trsat Castle is worthwhile for the fantastic view alone. From hardly any other place in Rijeka do you get such an expansive view over the port city and the Kvarner Bay stretching out before you.
The St. Vitus Cathedral in the old town near the harbor is dedicated to Saint Vitus, the patron saint of the city. The exterior of the mighty round building is characterized by Venetian style. Marvel at the precious interior of the church, including elaborate marble altars from the 18th century. The masterfully crafted pulpits from 1731, the old tombstones, and the beautifully painted stained glass will enchant lovers of sacred art. Legends surround the early Gothic crucifix in the baroque main altar. It is said to have bled after being struck by a stone.
The Capuchin Church was built between the years 1904 and 1929 and is today one of the most important places of worship in Rijeka. It impresses not only with its imposing exterior architecture but also with the altar sculpture and the Gothic stairs at the entrance. The Church of Our Lady of Lourdes is considered a special example of eclecticism, completed with neo-Gothic forms, not only in Croatia. The place of worship also reminds one of the Sanctuary of Lourdes, which is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe.
Sablićevo Beach is located near the Croatian city of Rijeka in the famous Kvarner Bay, known for its many dream beaches. It is easily accessible from the city and is situated in a small bay. In addition to the radiant colors that the sea offers here, the beach is also known for its good facilities, including showers, toilets, and changing rooms. It is a beach without too much hustle and bustle, offering basic amenities.
The museum, founded in 1961, presents the rich and eventful history of the region across several floors with interesting maritime, cultural-historical, and archaeological finds. The exciting interactive stations ensure that even the little visitors do not get bored. Events related to the Croatian coastal region are regularly held in the museum rooms. In its Lipa memorial, the house commemorates the killed residents of the village of the same name, which was burned by German SS troops in April 1944.
Rijeka is influenced by a Mediterranean climate. Even in winter, the average air temperature remains around eight degrees Celsius. You have to expect rain showers in the coastal city throughout the year. The least precipitation falls in August with 49 mm. From April to September, there are between ten and twelve hours of sunshine per day. During this time, the maximum average air temperature reaches between 14 degrees in April and 25 degrees Celsius in July and August. The water temperature is a swim-friendly 26 to 29 degrees Celsius from June to September. You can also swim in October at 20 degrees Celsius.
