Greve in Chianti

The medieval town of Greve in Chianti in Italy is characterized by its medieval architecture, a testament to its over 1,000-year history. The 27-meter-high tower of Galatrona bears witness to Bucine's medieval past. From the top, visitors are offered a magnificent panoramic view over the entire municipal area. As the "Gateway to Chianti," you can explore the nearby art cities of Tuscany such as Florence, Siena, or Arezzo from Bucine. Hikes around Bucine lead through the Tuscan landscape characterized by charming vineyards, cypresses, and hills. A beautiful excursion destination is the pilgrimage church of Santa Maria della Ginestra with an Etruscan well. A tree educational trail is dedicated to the monumental trees found in the region.

Montefiridolfi

A cypress-lined path leads you along olive groves up to the small village of Montefiridolfi. The Etruscans already settled in the area. Montefiridolfi's earth-toned houses crown the typical Tuscan tiled roofs. From the village, you have a magnificent view of the surrounding hills. Hiking trails take you into the idyllic landscape. A shady cypress avenue takes you on a 600-meter walk to the Castello di Montefiridolfi. The massive building made of sand-colored stone has overlooked the Val di Pesa since the 12th century. It received its current form in the 16th century.

San Donato in Poggio

The small San Donato in Poggio appears medieval with stone and brick houses. The place is surrounded by walls. The city gates Porta Fiorentina and Porta Senese, the old watchtower Torre Campanaria, and the Romanesque church Pieve di San Donato in Poggio with the bell tower bear witness to past times. In the center of the village, you can learn interesting facts about the cultural life of Tuscan craftsmen at the Emilio Ferrari Museum of Rural Culture. Hikers enjoy the surrounding vineyards and visit one of the Chianti wineries. Those who want to see the region from a lofty height can take a balloon ride in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, 6 km away.

San Gusmè

The walled San Gusmè exudes medieval charm in its small winding alleys. You can visit two churches in the village, the Santissima Annunziata with its bell tower and the Church of Saints Cosimus and Damian. Afterwards, enjoy Tuscan snacks in one of the cafés. From San Gusmè, you have magnificent views of the silhouette of Siena with its cathedral and Torre del Mangia. In addition to the art city, the neighboring towns of Montepulciano and Castelnuovo Berardenga are also suitable for an excursion. Just outside the gates of San Gusmè, the Felsina winery invites you to tastings.

Nature Reserve Bosco di Sant'Agnese

Halfway between the Italian town of Poggibonsi and the charming village of Castellina in Chianti, the Bosco di Sant'Agnese nature reserve hosts a historic cypress grove. The tree species, which likely came to Tuscany in ancient times through the Etruscans, forms a true forest in the over 270-hectare rocky area. The Riserva Naturale Bosco di Sant'Agnese, as the nature reserve is called in Italian, is best explored on a hike or mountain bike tour. Designated paths lead through a fascinating landscape. In addition to ancient cypresses, you will also encounter holm oaks, strawberry trees, and Mediterranean shrub formations known as garrigue. The reserve is also ideal for bird watching.

Chianti Hills

On the green hills that make up the Chianti, cypresses and pines grow sporadically. However, the vineyards are characteristic of the region. Look forward to fine wines that are awarded the Gallo Nero seal of quality. Many beautiful viewpoints are located along the 70 km long wine road. In the Chianti area, you can explore noteworthy towns. Greve in Chianti is known for its arcaded courtyards. Here is also the highest mountain of the Chianti, San Michele. Stroll in Radda in Chianti over the picturesque piazza, where fountains splash. Around the town, you will find some famous Chianti wineries.

Mount San Michele

With its 893 m height, Monte San Michele boasts as one of the highest elevations in the Chianti area. Alternatively, it is also known as Monte del Chianti. The fastest way to the summit starts at the outskirts of the small village of Badia a Montemuro, about 10 km away from Greve in Chianti. From the starting point, it is about 2 km with a gentle incline that leads you through the lush green Mediterranean landscape directly to the summit. After enjoying the panoramic view and a short walk around the summit, you return to the starting point on the same path. This is also an interesting route for mountain bike tours.

Valley of Pesa

The Italian river Pesa winds its way 53 km through the Tuscan provinces of Florence and Siena. The Pesa Valley accompanies the stream, which carries little water in sections during the summer, at an average height of 286 m. Culture enthusiasts visit San Casciano Val di Pesa, the most important center of the Florentine Chianti region. Its historic center, enclosed by a narrow 14th-century wall, houses a small museum and churches with art treasures from the 13th century. In the modern yet ancient Tavernelle Val di Pesa, you can marvel at the church of Santa Lucia al Borghetto in rare Tuscan Gothic style.

Chianti Botanical Park

The Botanical Park in Chianti belongs to the municipality of Barberino Tavarnelle in Tuscany. You can reach it about 10 kilometers outside the town with a two-hour hike or within 40 minutes by bike. In the 5-hectare forest park, you can admire numerous species of wild plants, including wild orchids and Chianti roses. The park, divided into several themed areas, is one of four research facilities of the environmental observatory located in the park. You can visit other parts like the observatory with the largest telescope in Tuscany and participate in guided tours, courses, excursions, or workshops. Art exhibitions and open-air concerts are also regularly held.
