Large, picturesque town, 105 km north-east from Fort William, 165 km west from Aberdeen. All shops, restaurants etc. in the resort. Capital city of the Highlands, Inverness is situated on the River Ness which leads into the famous Loch Ness - home of the infamous illusive monster. It offers beautiful river walks, a sports centre, ice rink, museum, art gallery, castle, cathedral, 3 golf courses. Above the city lies Craig Phadrig, once the stronghold of Pictish Kings, with interesting forest walks and great views of the Moray Firth and its wildlife including bottlenose dolphins which can be seen from the shore or on trips available from harbours along the coast. Important centre for bagpipe players and lovers, every September the city hosts the Northern Meeting, the most prestigious solo piping competition in the world. Another major event in calendar is the annual Highland Games, which take place over 3 days in July.
